Learn Pinch Harmonics

Many guitarists have trouble learning how to do pinch harmonics. Once learned through either online guitar lessons or more traditional guitar lessons the technique is really simple. 

I would like to explain the basics of pinch harmonics but I am going to try to keep it as non technical as possible. Technical terms are just not my style. I will break the steps down a simply as I can so that even beginners can understand and start making their guitars scream. 

The guitar string vibrates between the nut and the bridge. If you look closely you can see the string vibrating like a sine wave. When the wave stops or skips natural harmonics happen at those spaces on the string. Commonly this occurs above the five, seven and twelve fret wires. If you look closely in good lighting you can see the spots the vibration on the string seems to stop. A light touch on these points will get you a natural harmonic chime. 

A beginning guitarist may want to consider a learn to play guitar dvd. These dvds can be of great use when learning pinch and tap harmonics. Tap harmonics are simply fretting a string and moving the natural harmonic spot up to where you want it to be. Hence the name tap harmonics. 

A pinch harmonic is when you pinch the string between your pick and the side of your thumb. This can help to give you away to express your creative side a little more. Finding out where to strike the string to get the sound you want takes some trial and error. The best way to learn different techniques, is through online guitar lessons or regular guitar lessons. 

Start with your pick in about the middle of the neck and bridge pickups and pinch the so that when your pick sounds it your thumb immediately touches the string. This should sound a pinch harmonic. A learn to play guitar dvd has a good visual instruction of this technique. 

You may have to move your hand slightly higher of lower on the string to find the spot you are looking for. This is your trial and error period. A little visual lesson from an online guitar lesson spot may help if you keep having difficulty.

Now that you have found the spots that give the sounds you want try to make a mental not of where they are. Keep in mind that the spots do move up and down the line a little.This is tap harmonics at work. Practice and guitar lessons will help you learn anything you want to know the guitar, online guitar lessons are also an option. 

A different guitar will mean you have to relearn pinch harmonics. Every guitar has them in slightly different places. Keep practicing and you will get it soon. A longer neck or shorter bridge is part of the reason the pinch harmonics seem to be in different places. 

Keep practicing and try adding bends so that they sound each other. The more you practice the sooner you can have that guitar screaming like a wounded banshee. 

If you want to increase your skill with pinch harmonics, try practicing them with a clean sound. They can still be sounded and you accuracy will begin to increase.
